📌 Background & Impact:
Malaria continues to claim the lives of thousands of children across Africa each year. With the rollout of new malaria vaccines like RTS,S/AS01, understanding how communities perceive and comply with vaccination programs is vital. This study focuses on caregivers in Mambanda, Douala — a densely populated urban community — revealing a significant gap between general knowledge about malaria and awareness of specific vaccines like RTS,S and R21.
📊 Key Findings:
- 98% of mothers were aware of malaria, and 79.3% knew the role of vaccines.
- Yet, only 22% had heard of the RTS,S vaccine, and 9.3% knew about R21.
- 44.7% of children had received at least one dose of RTS,S.
- Despite high willingness to vaccinate (68.7%), barriers included fear of pain, misinformation, and access issues.

The study emphasizes the need for targeted, community-based sensitization efforts beyond mass media. It calls for partnerships with community leaders, healthcare workers, and innovative tools like SMS reminders to improve vaccine uptake and compliance.
